Q. How exactly does a virtual cookery class work?

A. On the date specified in the calendar (or at the beginning of each week for the 4 week courses) the course material for the week is uploaded to the password protected website. The material will include a detailed video and written transcript discussing the topic. It will also include up to 10 written recipes each with a short instructional video. Each recipe will also have a written, detailed troubleshooting guide and potential substitutions for different dietary requirements. There will also be a no-pressure homework assignment.

You can review the course material in your own time. It will be up to you how many and which of these recipes you choose to prepare. It will also be up to you whether you complete the homework assignment or not. There is a private flickr group where you can as questions, interact with the other students and upload pictures of your own creations, if you wish.

A live webinar is conducted once week on Monday evening. The exact timing will alternate from week to week – to suit both Northern and Southern Hemisphere students. There will be an informal chat about what’s been going on with the Virtual Cookery School and an open Q&A session. Participants will be able to interact via the chat function. The webinars will also be recorded so if you can’t make it, you won’t miss out.

Q. How would it be different to the instructional videos on stonesoup?

A. The main difference is in the live interactive webinar where participants can chat and ask questions and the flickr group where participants can upload questions and interact. The other key difference is the in depth trouble shooting guide to accompany each recipe. The chance to complete a weekly homework assignment, is another point of difference from standard video.

Q. Do you have a sample recipe available?

Q. Will I be able to ask questions?

A. Absolutely! You will be able to ask questions live during the weekly webinar but will also be able to email questions any time you like. The flickr group will also be a place to interact and discuss.

Q. Will I need to have a computer in my kitchen?

A. Definitely not, unless that’s what you’d like. It’s up to you whether you choose to print your recipes or download them onto your iphone or ipad or just find a safe space for your computer in the corner.

Q. Can I learn in my own time?

A. Of course. That’s one of the beautiful things about learning online. The only time based activity is the weekly webinar but you can email questions if you aren’t able to make it. If you miss the webinars, they will be recorded so you can watch when you are available.

Q. Do you cater for special dietary requirements?

A. Absolutely. Given the growing incidence of allergies, it’s important to be able to adapt recipes. My Dad is allergic to dairy, wheat and eggs so I have a bit of experience in the area. I also really respect the choices of vegetarians and vegans, and spent a month earlier in the year eating vegetarian.

Where possible, each recipe contains alternatives to suit different dietary requirements.

Q. Who is this course designed for?

A. Anyone who is interested in learning to cook simple, healthy, quick and most importantly delicious food. It’s designed for the readers of my blog Stonesoup who vary from teenagers living in China to grandmothers living in North Americia.

Q. What is minimalist home cooking?

A. Minimalist home cooking is something that I evolved over at my blog Stonesoup. It’s about reducing the number of ingredients, the amount of equipment, the number of steps involved and the time we spend in the kitchen to a minimum so we can focus what’s important. It’s about simple, wholesome, delicious food that is easy to prepare and still fun and satisfying to eat. I focus on recipes that have only 5 ingredients and take 10 minutes to prepare.

Q. Why is the cooking school called Stonesoup?

A. It’s named after my blog called Stonesoup | Minimalist Home Cooking that has been going since 2005. The blog name was inspired by the wonderful childrens story. You can read all about it over at my blog.

Q. How long are the classes and what are the dates?

A. There are short masterclasses, designed to be completed over 1-2 weeks and longer 4 week courses. You will have access to the material for the short classes for 4 weeks and the longer courses for 8 weeks from the date you start learning. Q. What do I need to bring?

A. The most important thing is a willingness to learn. Most people learn best by doing, so access to a basic kitchen would be a benefit.

Q. How much do the classes cost?

A. There are 2 different ways to pay for classes:
